Tisha B'Av is a fast day which commemorates the anniversary of several tragedies in Jewish history, primarily the destruction of the First Temple by the Babylonians and the Second Temple by the Romans.  It is traditional to chant the Book of Lamentations, and to sing songs with themes of sorrow and messages of hope.

Ma'ariv will be followed by chanting the book of Eicha (Lamentations) and singing special songs for the holiday.

8 pm: Learning with Rabbi Yoself Berman: "Abraham Joshua Heschel and the Shoah: Confronting Destruction and Suffering" 
In February of 1944, in the midst of World War II and the Shoah, Rabbi Abraham Joshua Heschel published an essay entitled "The Meaning of this War." In the essay, Heschel argues that we are unlikely to understand G!d's role in history but we are able to look at the outside world and respond with teshuva (repentance/return) and tikkunim (fixings/healings) within ourselves and begin to redeem the world. We'll look at this chilling and prophetic essay alongside some of the core sources Heschel draws upon to make his case.
